Sheridan Le Fanu, one of the masters of "horror in literature", was the father of the realistic story of fear, opened the current ghost stories, was a pioneer of the genre of detective of the occult and prefigured the literature and film vampire Carmilla.
Carmilla us about for the first time, the myth of vampirism, which Le Fanu incorporates a novel and transgressive element: a vampire Carmilla is independent of the male figure, a feature that is a clear questioning of the role of women in the Victorian era.
The simple but Carmilla gothic structure, the romantic atmosphere and the disturbing way of stating the facts make these terrifying pages in a refined pleasure for the reader.

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu, known as The Prince invisible to his friends and relatives, due to his voluntary imprisonment and inveterate misanthropy, was born in Dublin in 1814 and died in the same city where he was born in 1873. He studied law at Trinity College, but given his penchant for literature, he soon abandoned the practice of law to engage in journalism, publishing and literature.
Sheridan Le Fanu is one of the leading masters of the "horror in literature." Her ghost stories are one of the earliest examples of modern horror genre, the genre he knew chills bring new realism and plausibility by introducing into their stories and novels.
His best-known stories are macabre mystery novel Uncle Silas, published in 1864, The Rose and the Key (1871) and the highly acclaimed collection of short stories mirror Creatures (1872), which contains the novella Carmilla, perhaps first vampire tale, filmed in 1932 by Theodor Dreyer, as well as green tea and known.
Other fiction of Le Fanu: The roles of Purcell, the home next to the cemetery (1863), Wylde's hand r (1864), Enchanted Lives (1868) and posthumously published The Watcher and Other Stories Grim (1894).
